Rust and bodywork
The E-Type's shape is steel, and steel this old has a story written in it. This page is a deeper companion to the inspection section of the buying guide: where corrosion actually lives on the car, and how to read what you find.
Two features of the E-Type's construction decide how it corrodes. The centre of the car is a monocoque, so the body is the structure and there is no separate chassis to fall back on. The engine and front suspension hang from a bolted-on framework of smaller tubes and pressings ahead of the bulkhead. Rust attacks both, but it attacks them differently, and the remedies differ too.
The monocoque: floors, sills and boxes
Water gets in around the screen seals, the door apertures and the rear of the cabin, and it leaves slowly. It collects in the sills, which on an E-Type are structural, and in the box sections and floors that tie the shell together. From inside, the early signs are under the carpets and sound deadening rather than on the visible surface, so a check that stops at the door bottoms has not really started.
At the back, the boot floor, the spare wheel well, the rear wheel arches and the area around the rear suspension cage are the classic homes for rot. The independent rear suspension hangs in its own cage and its loads feed into the shell nearby, so corrosion there is not only cosmetic. Bubbles at the arch lips are the visible tip of whatever is happening behind the trim.
The front frames and the bonnet
The engine frames can corrode at their lower points and where they meet the bulkhead, and they can also be bent by a past impact. Distortion shows as uneven bonnet and door gaps, a bonnet that will not sit right at the hinge line, or a car that tracks oddly. Frame replacement is a known and well-supported job, which makes it expensive rather than fatal, but it has to be found before purchase rather than after.
The bonnet is a large one-piece assembly with an inner structure that traps moisture along its seams and around the headlamp area. It rots from the inside out, so the underside tells the truth before the top does. Poor bonnet fit is as often a frame or shell symptom as a bonnet fault, which is why the two are inspected together.
Reading a repair
Honest repair work has a signature. Original factory spot-welds have a regular, machine-made look; drilled-out and rewelded panels look different, which is fine, but the difference tells you a panel has been replaced and invites the question of what else was done at the same time. Repair sections that cover only the visible face of a sill while leaving the structure behind it are the classic cosmetic job, and they buy a few seasons at best.
Documentation settles most of this. A restoration with photographs of the shell stripped, the sections fitted and the dates attached is worth trusting. A car described as restored with nothing to show for it should be priced in your head as unrestored until proven otherwise.
Keeping it from coming back
Prevention is unglamorous and effective. Keep drain holes clear, dry the car before it goes away, treat enclosed sections with a cavity wax on a schedule, and fix water ingress at the seal rather than mopping up after it. A dry, used car stays sound far more readily than a polished one that sits damp. Common questions
Where does an E-Type rust first?
The enclosed and low points of the monocoque: sills, floors, the box sections beneath them, the boot floor and spare wheel well, the rear wheel arches and the areas around the rear suspension mountings. The bolt-on front frames corrode too, and the bonnet's inner structure traps moisture. Any of these can be present under fresh paint.
Can you check an E-Type for rust without a lift?
Only partially. You can look under carpets, inside the boot, around the pedals and along the sill tops, and you can press gently at suspect areas. The decisive view is from underneath on a lift with good light, and a car that cannot be lifted for inspection is a car about which you know less than you should before buying.
Is a resprayed E-Type a warning sign?
Paint itself proves nothing either way, since most E-Types have been repainted at least once. The question is what the paint covers. Consistent panel gaps, crisp spot-weld patterns in original areas, and photographic or invoiced evidence of any bodywork tell you more than the shine.
Can a rusty E-Type monocoque be repaired properly?
Yes, and it is done well every week by specialists, using repair sections and full panels that are now widely available. The questions are cost, the quality of the jig work that keeps the structure true, and whether the repair was done to last or done to sell. Evidence of the work is what separates the two.
