What restoring an E-Type actually involves

The mechanical parts of an E-Type are well understood and well supplied. The structure is what decides whether a car is worth saving, and it is the part most often misjudged.

This page gives no costs. Prices for labour, panels and parts move constantly and vary by country, by workshop and by how much of the work an owner does, so any figure printed here would be wrong within a year and would be quoted back for a decade. What follows is the shape of the job instead: how the car is put together, what fails, in what order the work has to happen, and what to understand before committing to it.

How the car is built

The E-Type has no separate chassis. The centre of the car is a steel monocoque tub, welded up from folded sheet, which carries the floors, sills, transmission tunnel, bulkhead, rear suspension mountings and the rear bodywork. Bolted to the front bulkhead is a tubular steel front subframe, which carries the engine, the front suspension and the forward bodywork including the one-piece forward-hinged bonnet. The independent rear suspension is a self-contained assembly with inboard brakes, mounted to the tub through rubber.

Two consequences follow from that, and they govern everything else. First, the tub is structural, so corrosion in the floors, sills and bulkhead is not cosmetic damage but structural damage. Second, alignment of the front end depends on the bulkhead and the subframe mounting points being true, so a car that has been hit at the front, or has rotted where the subframe bolts on, will fight every attempt to make the bonnet fit.

Where the structure fails

  • Floors and footwells. The first place to look and the most commonly patched. Repairs are frequently made over the top of the original metal rather than in place of it.
  • Sills. The inner and outer sill structure carries a large part of the car's stiffness. Outer sills can be replaced to look right while the inner structure behind them is gone. This is the single most misrepresented area on a car being sold as solid.
  • Bulkhead and its gussets. The front bulkhead ties the tub to the subframe. Corrosion here is expensive and awkward because access is poor and because everything forward of it has to come off first.
  • Subframe mounting points. Rot or distortion at the mountings puts the front end out of true and shows up as bonnet gaps that cannot be adjusted out.
  • Rear suspension mounting areas and boot floor. The rear radius arm mountings in particular, where water collects.
  • The bonnet. A multi-piece assembly in its own right, with an inner structure that rots and a shape defined mathematically by Malcolm Sayer, as described on the car page. Making a repaired or replacement bonnet sit correctly is among the most skilled parts of the whole job.
  • The front subframe itself. Tubular steel, so it rusts from the inside where it cannot be inspected easily, and it can be distorted by an impact that left little visible damage.

The order the work has to happen in

An E-Type restoration is sequential in a way that a mechanical rebuild is not, and the sequence cannot be shuffled to suit convenience.

  1. Strip and document. Photograph, bag and label everything. Original trim, brackets and fixings are far harder to replace than mechanical parts, and the documentation is what makes reassembly possible a year or two later.
  2. Expose the metal. Blasting or chemical stripping, then an honest assessment of what has been revealed. Plans made before this point are provisional.
  3. Structural repair on a jig or reference. Floors, sills, bulkhead and mounting points, in a fixed relationship to each other, before anything cosmetic.
  4. Panel fit in bare metal. Bonnet, doors and boot lid hung and aligned before paint. Gaps corrected in steel, not in filler.
  5. Protection and paint. Then a long wait, because paint needs to harden before assembly begins.
  6. Mechanical rebuild in parallel. Engine, gearbox, axle, brakes and suspension can be done while the body work proceeds.
  7. Assembly, wiring and trim. Slower than expected, and the stage where poor documentation during the strip becomes obvious.
  8. Setting up and sorting. Weeks of small faults, on any car.

Things to understand before starting

  • Buy the best structure you can, not the best paint. Mechanical condition and cosmetics are recoverable and priceable. Structure is neither.
  • Establish what the car was before you decide what it will be. A Heritage Certificate from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust gives the original colour, trim, engine and gearbox numbers and despatch details, and xkedata.com may already hold photographs and history for that chassis number. Both are far cheaper than discovering halfway through that the car is not what you thought.
  • Decide early how original the car is going to be. A car returned to factory specification, a car improved with later parts, and a car built for regular use are three different projects with three different parts lists. Changing your mind at the assembly stage is expensive in a way this archive will happily describe without putting a number on.
  • Originality is a one-way door. Original panels, trim and fittings, once discarded, do not come back. Where a part can be repaired rather than replaced, that choice is usually worth making.
  • Parts supply is genuinely good. The E-Type is well served by specialists for mechanical and trim components. That is a real advantage over most cars of the era, and it is also why the structure, which cannot be ordered in a box, dominates the difficulty.
  • Judge the workshop by structural work, not by finished cars. Ask to see cars mid-restoration, in bare metal, on the jig. Anyone can photograph a finished car.
  • Keep the record. Photographs, invoices and notes made as you go are part of the car afterwards, and they are the only evidence of what was actually done underneath the paint.
