Owning one in America

North America was the E-Type's largest market when the car was new and it is where most of them still are, which makes the American owner the typical owner and the British one the exception. This page covers what that actually means day to day: which states will test the car and which will not, what E10 does to a fifty year old fuel system and why E15 is not merely inadvisable but prohibited, what the published market analysts say about American values, and which parts of a left hand drive car are genuinely different.

Most of what is written for E-Type owners assumes a British car in Britain. That is the minority case. This page is written the other way round.

Why most of them are here

There is no single authoritative figure for how many E-Types went to North America, and the sources disagree. All three are given here, each named.

  • The xkedata article "XKE Car Numbers: A Guide" by Roger Los publishes chassis number ranges split by drive configuration, citing numbers published by Paul Skilleter. Summing those spans gives 58,391 left hand drive and 14,137 right hand drive, a total of 72,528, of which 80.5 per cent is left hand drive.
  • The Jaguar Clubs of North America state that over three quarters of the 72,000 E-Types built came to the US, which puts the figure above 54,000.
  • Octane, Matthew Hayward, 10 July 2024: around 85 per cent of production was exported.

What is well supported is that North America was the E-Type's largest single market. The design record says so on its own. From late 1967 the car was changed repeatedly to meet American regulation: the covered headlights went, the turn signals moved beneath the bumpers, the interior switches and panels changed, and the eared knock off spinners were replaced. A manufacturer does not redesign a car around one market unless that market dominates.

Did American cars survive better?

The mechanism is well documented. The United States applies deicing salt at very large scale: the United States Geological Survey recorded highway deicing as about 37 per cent of total salt consumed in 2025, out of 39 million tons sold or used. The Transportation Research Board's Special Report 235 attributed between 1.9 and 3.9 billion dollars of annual vehicle corrosion cost to salt, identified the Northeast and Midwest as the affected regions, and observed that vehicles of the 1970s suffered structural damage where modern vehicles show primarily cosmetic corrosion. That last point cuts directly in favour of the argument.

Whether E-Types specifically survived better in the dry states is a different question, and the archive could not find a single study, survival register analysis, insurer data set or published market analysis testing it. The chain of reasoning is a plausible inference from the mechanism, not a measured finding, and it is presented here as one.

Emissions and inspection, which is entirely a state question

There is no federal in-use emissions test in the United States. Testing is a state programme, and the states differ so widely that a generalisation is worse than useless. Twenty seven states have some form of emissions testing legislation. Twenty two limit it to non attainment counties near metropolitan areas, and five test statewide: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Seventeen states require a routine periodic safety inspection, which means the majority do not, and that is a real difference from the British MOT regime.

Federally, a pre 1968 petrol car is excluded from the Clean Air Act's motor vehicle provisions altogether under 40 CFR 85.1511(f)(1)(i), and a 1968 to 1974 car is exempted under (f)(2). The one federal in-use provision worth knowing about is the anti tampering prohibition at section 203(a)(3) of the Clean Air Act. EPA's Tampering Policy of 23 November 2020 frames that prohibition around vehicles subject to the certification requirements under section 206, and states that the Policy does not address vehicles excluded from the relevant definitions. A pre 1968 car was never certified, so on the face of the policy there is nothing to tamper with. For a 1968 to 1974 American market E-Type that left the factory with emissions equipment the position is less clear on the public record, and the archive does not assert that removing that equipment is lawful.

Fuel

What is actually in the pumps

Almost all American petrol is E10. The Energy Information Administration states that most finished motor gasoline sold in the United States is about 10 per cent fuel ethanol by volume, and records about 13.73 billion gallons of fuel ethanol blended into 137.11 billion gallons of finished motor gasoline in 2023. The Department of Energy describes E10 as approved by EPA for use in any conventional gasoline powered vehicle.

A British reader needs to understand that this is not the same choice architecture as the United Kingdom. British regulations maintain a 95 RON standard grade with ethanol up to 10 per cent alongside a higher octane grade the trade markets as Super E5 Protection. There is no equivalent nationally guaranteed low ethanol protection grade in the United States. Ethanol free petrol exists in some states and at some outlets, but the archive did not verify its availability and will not assert it.

E15 is prohibited, not merely inadvisable

What ethanol does to a 1960s fuel system

The most careful published assessment the archive found is from the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. It concerns British E10, but the chemistry is the same, and the FBHVC is a clubs federation rather than a commercial party.

The primary problem is elastomer compatibility: swelling, shrinking and cracking of seals and flexible pipes and other unsuitable gasket materials. The mechanism the FBHVC gives is that the ethanol molecule is smaller and more polar than conventional petrol components, so there is a lower energy barrier for ethanol to diffuse into elastomer materials. They swell and soften, weakening the structure, and on drying out they can shrink and crack, resulting in fuel leaks. The materials the FBHVC names are cork, shellac, certain elastomers and nylon.

Mapping that onto an E-Type is the archive's own inference and is marked as such: the flexible fuel hoses, the fibre and cork gaskets in the SU or Stromberg carburettors, the float chamber components and any float made of plastic rather than brass, and any tank sealant applied during a restoration are all in the exposed set.

On lay up, the FBHVC's advice is that if a vehicle is to be laid up for an extended period the E10 should be replaced with ethanol free petrol, and separately that fuel systems should not be left dry, because that too causes corrosion and the shrinking and cracking of gaskets as they dry out.

A limitation the archive records rather than papers over: it did not find a statement of the phase separation mechanism, ethanol absorbing atmospheric water until the blend separates in the tank, in any primary or reputable source it was able to load. The mechanism is very widely described in enthusiast and marine writing, but that is not a source by this archive's standard, so the page describes only what the FBHVC actually says.

Separately from materials damage there is a mixture effect. The FBHVC states that E10 contains approximately 35 per cent oxygen by weight, producing a leaning effect that can cause power loss and driveability problems, hesitations, flat spots and stalling. On a carburetted E-Type that is a tuning consequence, not a wear consequence, and the two should be kept apart.

On additives the FBHVC says it is not aware of and has not tested any additive claiming complete fuel system protection with respect to elastomer and gasket materials for use with E10. The archive does not recommend products, and quoting that negative finding is the correct way to handle the question.

Leaded fuel and valve seats

Leaded petrol is gone. EPA announced that effective 1 January 1996 the Clean Air Act banned the sale of the small amount of leaded fuel still available for on road use.

Valve seat recession is a real mechanism. The Valve Seat Recession Working Group report prepared for the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles describes abrasive particles formed by a welding mechanism, the weld occurring between the valve metal and the valve seat metal when the valve strikes the seat on closing and then pulls the welded particle with it on opening.

The finding that matters most is the same report's, and it is not the one usually quoted. It states that valve seat recession has been virtually absent in actual vehicle or engine operation, including the normal everyday operation of older vehicles, and records real world studies across several countries finding no reported problems with valve seat recession or excessive valve wear, with the damage appearing chiefly in accelerated laboratory tests at sustained high speeds. The AA's position is consistent but less absolute: engines with valve seats cut directly into a cast iron head or block are vulnerable when driven hard.

Octane, and why American numbers look lower

American pumps display an antiknock index. The Federal Trade Commission's Fuel Rating Rule at 16 CFR Part 306 defines the octane rating as the sum of the research octane number plus the motor octane number, divided by two. British regulations specify petrol by RON and MON minima, with the standard grade at a minimum 95 RON.

Because the American index is an average that includes MON, the pump figure is always below the RON figure for the same fuel, by half of that fuel's octane sensitivity. That much is arithmetic and follows from the definition. The archive has not verified a reliable typical value for that gap, and it will not print one. The widely repeated figure of four or five points is not verified here.

The Energy Information Administration gives the American grades as regular, generally 87, midgrade, generally 89 to 90, and premium, generally 91 to 94. Treat American premium as the top of the domestic range and judge the car by whether it pinks.

What the market data says

The archive does not give investment advice and holds no view on whether an E-Type is a good purchase. What follows is attributed reporting of what named analysts have published, with the date of each analysis, because a 2022 conclusion is not a 2026 market.

The strongest published finding is Hagerty's. John Mayhead, writing on 19 August 2022, found that the resurgence in E-Type values seems to be an American phenomenon, and that in Britain values had been steady or even declining. Supporting figures he gives: British values reached a ten year low in January 2021 of 91,200 pounds; over a twelve month period Hagerty's median E-Type value rose from roughly 90,000 to 108,000 dollars; and in a sixteen month window thirteen examples sold for over 250,000 dollars at American auctions. He attributes part of the American rise to a scarcity of quality restored cars there. He also reports a demographic shift: five years earlier nearly 90 per cent of the Series 1 E-Types Hagerty covered worldwide were owned by drivers born before 1965, and by 2022 that was closer to 65 per cent.

For current transaction data, CLASSIC.COM's Jaguar E-Type Series 1 market page, as displayed in September 2026, gives an average sale price of 151,089 dollars across 56 vehicles listed, with benchmarks by body style of 81,253 dollars for the 1962 to 1968 coupe across 16 listings and 121,781 dollars for the 1962 to 1968 roadster across 33 listings. That benchmark is a calculated aggregate of public auction and dealer listing outcomes, not an appraisal, and the gap between the overall average and the per body style benchmarks reflects the mix of cars in each set.

On left hand drive against right hand drive, the archive could not verify a quantified premium from any published analyst either, and it prefers to describe the geography of the preference rather than assign a number to it. America is a left hand drive market. A left hand drive E-Type in America is the normal case, not a compromise. The right hand drive premium discussion is a British market phenomenon, driven by British buyers' preference and by the supply of ex American cars into Britain, many of which were converted. Hagerty's British buying guide notes those conversions, acknowledges concerns about their quality, and states that properly converted cars become equivalent in value to original right hand drive examples.

What is actually different about a left hand drive car

Less than people assume, and in some non obvious places.

The chassis number itself records the hand, because E-Types were numbered in separate sequences by drive configuration rather than distinguished by a prefix letter. For the 3.8 Series 1 roadster, right hand drive cars run from 850001 and left hand drive from 875001. The full structure is set out on the chassis and engine numbers page. This is the check to make on any car offered as an original left hand drive car: the number alone tells you.

The steering rack is handed and carries distinct part numbers, with separate manual racks for each hand on Series 1 and Series 1 4.2 cars, separate right and left hand Series 2 power steering conversions, and separate factory Series 3 power steering rack kits. Steering column universal joints are common across models and both hands.

Beyond the obvious, a published restoration record of a Series 1 converted from left to right hand drive gives a usefully complete list of the items that actually had to change: the pedal box, removed from the left side with the pedals modified to the new orientation; the steering rack and its mountings; the steering column and its connection to the lower column; the central wiper mechanism and the wiper arms; the brake pipework, with the rear brake pipe rerouted to the other side, the front copper pipes reshaped and new pipes fabricated for the reservoir to master cylinder runs; the dashtop, radio console, glove box and dash panels; the indicator bracket; the speedometer cable routing; the throttle linkage, where both rods had to be shortened by different amounts; and the ignition switch and push button.

The larger point is that the mechanically significant differences between an American E-Type and a British one are market specification rather than steering hand. An American market Series 2 has two Zenith Stromberg carburettors where a home market car has three SUs, with the inlet manifold, linkage, air cleaner and tuning that go with them. An American Series 3 runs 7.8 to 1 compression against 9.0 to 1. The Series 2 dashboard was redesigned with rocker switches to meet American safety regulation. One genuine left hand drive specific difference is that factory air conditioning was offered on Series 2 cars for left hand drive only, which affects the heater and bulkhead installation.

Parts in the United States

The archive does not rank, rate or recommend suppliers, and it says nothing about price, quality, accuracy of reproduction or delivery. What follows records only firms whose own websites were read on 10 September 2026, with what each says about itself. Inclusion is not endorsement, and the list is not complete.

  • SNG Barratt operates a United States address at Petersburg, Virginia, with the parent company in the United Kingdom.
  • Welsh Enterprises is based in Steubenville, Ohio, established 1965, and states that it ships to all of North America and across the globe.
  • Moss Motors operates an E-Type catalogue running to over 1,800 items, with facilities indicated in California and Virginia, and carries a notice that direct ship items will only be sent to an address in the 48 contiguous states.
  • Terry's Jaguar Parts gives an address at Portage, Michigan, and states it has supplied Jaguar parts since 1976. Older enthusiast material widely refers to it as a Benton, Illinois business. The archive uses the address the firm itself currently publishes.

Martin Robey and David Manners are British businesses that supply internationally; the archive did not verify their United States shipping terms, or Terry's Jaguar's shipping terms at all. The wider supplier picture is on the parts and specialists page.

What the archive has not established

  • Any manufacturer side figure for American market E-Type sales. No Jaguar or Heritage Trust source gives one, and the sixtieth anniversary press release of 9 December 2020 contains no production or export figures at all.
  • Whether E-Types survived better in the dry American states. The mechanism is documented, the outcome has not been measured by anybody the archive could find.
  • Arizona's emissions cut off, which enthusiasts widely give as pre 1967. ADEQ's own material does not state one.
  • Whether historical plates in New York relax the annual safety inspection as well as the emissions test.
  • Whether the original valve seat insert material in an XK or V12 head requires replacement for unleaded use.
  • A verified typical value for the gap between a RON figure and an American antiknock index figure.
  • The factory's own stated octane requirement for the E-Type, in any source.
  • Any published analyst figure isolating a covered headlamp premium, or a quantified left hand drive against right hand drive premium.
  • How the brake servo installation differs between left and right hand drive cars, and whether the bulkhead pressing itself, the heater and demister ducting, or the wiper motor and rack assembly are handed as distinct parts.
  • The phase separation mechanism, from any source meeting the archive's standard.

Common questions

Do I need a smog check for a Jaguar E-Type in California?

No. The Bureau of Automotive Repair's Smog Check Reference Guide lists gasoline vehicles of 1975 model year and older as exempt, and every E-Type was built by 1974. The separate collector car provision for vehicles at least 35 model years old is not needed and should not be confused with it.

Can I run E10 in a Jaguar E-Type?

It is legal, and almost all American petrol is E10, so in practice you have little choice. The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs identifies the main risk as elastomer compatibility: ethanol diffuses into rubber, cork, shellac and nylon components, swelling and softening them, and they can shrink and crack on drying out, causing fuel leaks. E15 is a different matter and is prohibited.

Is E15 legal in a classic car?

No. 40 CFR 1090.230(a) prohibits any person from selling, introducing, causing or permitting the introduction of petrol containing more than 10 per cent ethanol into any light duty vehicle of model year 2000 or older. That is a federal regulation, not a manufacturer recommendation, and the wording reaches the person putting the fuel in, not only the retailer.

Does an E-Type need hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel?

The archive cannot tell you, and it would rather say so than guess. The XK head is aluminium with valve seat inserts, so the cast iron head case that drives the usual concern does not describe it. The Valve Seat Recession Working Group found that recession has been virtually absent in actual vehicle operation. But no source meeting this archive's standard states whether the original insert material is adequate for unleaded, and specialist opinion divides on it.

How can I tell if an E-Type was originally left hand drive?

From the chassis number. E-Types were numbered in separate sequences by drive configuration rather than by a prefix letter, so for example a 3.8 Series 1 roadster running from 850001 is right hand drive and one from 875001 is left hand drive. The number alone settles it, which makes it the first check on any car offered as an original left hand drive example.
